The stylish revenge entertainer gets packaged with all the trademark enjoyable Shankar gimmicky elements and fascinating visuals, but unfortunately the predictable narrative structure, some cliched dull scenes and overstretched runtime keep pulling the engagement factor down. In the end, the heart and soul performance of Vikram delivering mind blowing physical transformations and AR Rahman’s lovable music are about the only takeaways in an otherwise passable drama.
lots of reasons i thought i hated this (the extremely prominent homophobic/transmisogynist subplot is the Fucking Worst) but then for weeks afterward i kept doing the "more than that" finger twirl and laughing alone in my room, and i thought that perhaps i should reevaluate.
yeah, the extended-flashback structure completely kneecaps the pacing. as if i'm here for some bullshit like "narrative". these are some of the most acutely absurd action setpieces and disgustingly opulent musical numbers in the entire shankar filmography. it is the festering ground of his highest highs and lowest lows. so what if it's mostly the latter. it's not a shankar unless it makes me want to kill myself at least a little bit.
I watching on this movie with high expectations , but i didn't felt satisfactory at the end. Movie is good, it just that i had over expectations on shankar.
The good parts are so good (and I’ve truly never seen anything like this) but the bad parts are so cruel and hateful that they swallow everything else up...
Death? No, more than that.
I is Love
I is Pain
I is Devil
I is Revenge
but most of all...
I is batshit insane

idgaf what shankar thinks - dude clearly lost his marbles decades ago - but i hope ranjith teaches chiyaan about trans people... we're not all villains bro!! well, i mean, i am, but--

A lot of Man-Boobs init.
The way Lingesan and Gym Babu made fun of Osma, they did not hesitate a bit.
Everytime Sura was on screen, my mind be like:
Polayadi Mone
A perfect revenge story.
This film done showed me the horrors of:
Modeling
Advertising
Makeup
Doctor
Bodybuilding
And ofcourse Osma.
Like other films by Shankar, I is ambitious with its large scope, unconventional visuals, and prosthetic make up designs. However, tonal inconsistencies, humor that has not aged well, and some underdeveloped side characters makes it hard to resonate with many emotional threads that compose the story.
It’s interesting to see how Shankar tries to present the story in a nonlinear timeline. This aspect of the storytelling is accentuated by interesting transitions. One example of these transitions includes the use of TV advertisements, that play a larger role in the story, to help jump between two time periods the story shows. Despite the unique nature of this method to connect the story, it also allows for moments of repetition which ultimately…
Wow, what a letdown.
+ves:
-Vikram.(Who has proven that he's the Christian Bale of Indian Cinema when it comes to physically transforming himself into a character.)
-Amy Jackson is stunning.
-The whole I virus concept.
-ves:
-Script; Everything is predictable, the "twist" included.
-Laggy.
-Flat humour, especially towards the end.
-Suresh Gopi.
It's a shame this movie ends up being such a boring, cliched experience, especially considering the fact that the main plot is actually interesting.
The story could've been handled in a better way, but I just totally misses the mark. Mediocre at best.
If you want a movie about a disfigured man harming those who have ruined his life that has crazy cool visuals, thrills, fantastic performances, and a genuinely empathetic story….watch The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). If you want to watch a film that has moments of visually interesting ideas, but is mostly an extremely long, progressively worse sexist and transphobic clusterfuck…watch I (2019).
It’s not a complete piece of trash. Like I said, there is a lot of creativity and unique visually going on here. If I had to describe this film in one word it would be ambitious, and that’s something to be admired in its own right. It simply fails to rise to its calling. Which is understandable: I don’t…
Not without its fair share of flaws and a part of me still wish Shankar went for a body horror approach, something in the same vein as Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance which came out last year. However, it’s a terrific, relentless fun romantic/revenge thriller that never lets up when it comes to the eye-popping extravaganza and action set pieces that are entertainingly choreographed and staged (there’s one which has clearly inspired the fight scene in Pushpa: The Rise, with the hands tied and the head covered).
Boasts an insane level of product placements, given the premise. Shankar would make a terrific ad film director too, lol.
Vikram is stylish af and delivers in spades when it comes to the performance, which is…
Every queer person should be given the legal right to slap Shankar.
