Kids on bikes - western-style! I found it rather cute. Absolutely a minor effort, but the simplicity worked in its favor.
At only 63 minutes, "Kid West" lands as a watchable kid-targeted effort featuring respectable heroes and tolerable hijinks. In its short run time, the backyard adventure finds a cowboy hat-bedecked tween and her soon-to-be pal taking on a gang of neighborhood bullies on a quest for a mystical key. None of its very artful, but none of it is bad; and all of it is elevated by an earnest tone and dirt-under-the-fingernails grit. The results are solid if easily dismissed.
If you have ever seen a indie kids movie before you’ve seen this movie.
It’s biggest benefit is that it is short.
Also the main child actress is surprisingly not terrible.
The only reason I saw this is because a guy from my town had a super minor role in it when he was in like 7th grade.
3/10 honestly surprised me by how not bad it was.
"Come quick! Over at the Junior High field, a whole swarm of bullies stopped our fun-loving game of one-handed touch football! They've turned the goalposts into a giant slingshot and they've threatened to sling my friends one by one until they surrender the field!”
This was cute and fun. Mary Bair is quite charming and delivers a delightful and enjoyable performance.
Left to her own devices while her mother is at work, a young girl dresses like a cowboy and passes the time solving small-scale mysteries in this fun family oriented comedy. The stakes never feel especially high and the fantasy content introduced towards the end feels a bit off, but Mary Blair brings such energy and charisma to the lead role that she is absolutely captivating to follow around. She is always full of quick wit and frequently talks with the maturity of someone twice her age. Her back-story is pretty interesting too, modelling herself on a deceased lawman father, while there is much to like in how fearless she is when taking on older kids. Of the supporting cast,…
Indiana Jones meets Nancy Drew in this kid adventure of a plucky little cowgirl and her clever sidekick, as they race against bullies to find a treasure that may or may not be containing magic powers.
Only an hour and 9 minutes long, “Kid West” doesn’t waste time getting to the adventure. The film encompasses a world where the kids are on the same level as the adults, showing the adults to be just as clever as the kids and visa versa. What makes this odd though is the character of the single mother, who’s struggling and worried about losing her new job, gets tied up and gagged twice within the span of a couple hours, by a villain who’s…
most of this is just an average low budget kids movie but the actress and character of kid west is so charismatic and likeable, I love her.
