A brilliantly layered tale of modern day love-relationships, that’s got some well written characters, outstanding performances and terrific direction. It does have a conventional triangular love story, but the matured outlook and the way it handles the complex emotional dynamics, makes the movie stand out. The music and visuals complement the mood perfectly. Taapsee is the show stealer and is well supported by Vicky and Abhishek. Despite of a few duds, its a solid romantic drama that impresses with its energy and heart.
Everyone in this is so complicated and flawed, the whole situation is so frustrating, Rumi constantly being confused and not being able to make up her mind just feels so realistic, and is brilliantly portrayed by Taapsee Pannu. Also the setting of Amritsar is just filled with such vibrant energy. The way the film uses its music is also really interesting, and works with the thematic growth of the characters. I could see how someone might find the constant going back and leaving frustrating, but I honestly found it to be very emotionally charged, with Rumi being a character who acts on impulse and doesn’t think things through, and her confusion makes sense in the situation she’s in. Also I love everything about the ending.
Happy to say my mom is an Abhishek Bachchan fan now😫👏🏽.
A Tangled Knot of Love and Self-Discovery
Anurag Kashyap returns yet again with his 4th directorial venture this year, after Mukkabaaz, Lust Stories and Sacred Games. This is his full blown out attempt at romance genre, in the more commercial sense of filmmaking.
With Anurag Kashyap at helm you can never ever expect, generic filmmaking. You can watch any of the trailers of his films but the film will surprise you. Manmarziyaan is no different, he sets up the world beautifully. He takes his own time to create this well realised world and expresses ideology in the opening song "Grey Wala Shade", where lyrics clearly define the characters having grey shades, as well as the times we live in, we've moved on from the traditional sense of…
i started watching this really late at night intending to stop halfway but i got so caught up i watched the whole thing...weirdly enough the more i think about the flaws here the more i'm impressed with it, the characters' actions are so often contradictory, a lot of things don't make sense, and normally with this type of set up i would have been really annoyed that the woman's gradual maturity is within this marriage framework. but the performances and costumes are so good, the many tender moments between the main characters and their families felt natural and true, and kashyap does such a beautiful job creating their environments (especially the recurring focus on food), i totally bought all of…
This movie should be named “Immature Selfish Woman Makes A Big Fuss And Then Ultimately Regrets It When She Got What She Wanted” directed by Guy Who Definitely Has A Weird Thing For Twins.
What’s with all the unnecessary scenes with twins? Why doesn’t Rumi make up her mind? Why doesn’t Robbie just move on and marry someone who actually deserves him? Who knows. Not me.
Cinematography was good but story was illogical and boring after a point. I felt like this movie was an hour too long it felt never ending. It had a lot of potential but Bollywood wants women to eventually end up with someone at the end of the movie, predictably.
Also Bollywood thinks a “modern,…
Director Catalog: Anurag Kashyap
Anurag Kashyap goes full on BOLLYWOOD. Takes every subject and theme of a typical Bollywood film and churns out a watchable film that Bollywood audience will enjoy and love. It clearly depicts that this isn’t written by him. The climax is really mature and healthy as well.
Listen I know I just wrote a whole thing in my last review about my political reservations about movies that romanticize choosing marriage but I just cried through the entire final scene of this movie and I love it so fucking much, I contain multitudes ok!!!!!!!!!
Nobody loves this soundtrack like I love this soundtrack
Manmarziyaan (or Husband Material, something Mira Nair or Satyajit Ray would name their international releases) is the fourth directed feature film by Anurag Kashyap this year. His work has seen his technique deployed in different genres,on different actors and for different media. Lust Stories, an anthology of short films, Sacred Games, a TV series co-directed by him (the flashback bits) and two feature films primarily centered around love. Different kinds of love; Vineet Kumar Singh's Shravan with a rift between his love for boxing and his quiet love for Sunaina, Radhika Apte's obsessive/oblivious Kalindi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui's megalomaniac gangster with a heart, Gaitonde, and now a love story that harks back to the old Aashiq vs Humsafar (the Lover vs the…
Watched with my girlfriend and I was fighting for my life trying not to say "anuraga kashyapin vellam" because I did not want to sleep on the road
LOVE the fact that Kashyap fixates on vibes more than plot. Second half of Manmarziyaan is incredible. Characters just vibing to sad music and brooding. Those little details in between are rare to find in any other mainstream romance film. Yash Chopra would have been proud.
Will miss this Vicky. I just know he won't be back for these roles.
