Circa 1800s, an intoxicated Jamindar insults Durga Devi by stealing her temple idol. Enraged, Devi kills him and places a curse on his heirs that, every 48 years, she will take one family member. Holy shit, I never realized how freaking beautiful Murari would look on the big screen! I feel like seeing Ekkada Ekkada, Cheppamma, and Andhanikey in their full glory changed me as a person...
My only issue is that I wish some of the scenes didn't get cut out. I think it was hardly 5-10 mins worth of footage but it still felt a bit incomplete.

I'm not one for the Sooraj Barjatya-esque joint family drama, but Murari has a real lightness of touch, a sense of beauty and levity that feels authentic and not manufactured. Little details like Murari being named after his grandfather and everyone, including his father, having to refer to him as meeru.
A really great romance at the heart of it all, one of the finest soundtracks (and background scores), the best performances from an ensemble cast after Mayabazaar, and one of the great third acts in Telugu cinema. Like Kantara, a deeply superstitious and religious movie, but that's just one among many flavours in the Ugadi pachchadi.

Okkadu and Arjun might be the proper full-blown germination of the action star in Mahesh, but yesterday's night rewatch of Murari after a long time made me remember how the seeds of such action image were all sown here itself... the fights and villains may be silly or petty in Murari, but I love the way Mahesh involves himself in action here as if he's literally beating the hell outta them! Such a beautiful film with soul. The simple setting with simple music and simple acting with simple characters that’s it inta chalu oka manchi cinema avadaniki. You don’t need a Bahubali or RRR to make people go crazy make a soulful film with passion and effort people with keep it in their hearts till they die. I don’t think I’d ever imagine seeing this re-released in such amazing quality and sound on the big screen with the local dhfm *redacted* organization, especially on SSMB’s birthday but there I was seated at 10 pm with confetti already being poured on my head.
I really love this movie, the music overload, the young Sonali and Mahesh sweeties, the comedy which is still so funny, and how it is such a breeze to watch. Truly one of the best family dramas of the early 2000s that still holds up and doesn’t feel weighed down by subject matter or length. I did notice some scenes, especially in the beginning hour were cut down or deleted entirely. I didn’t grow up…
This movie has aged much better than I expected. The mythical plot, the liveliness of the ensemble cast, electric chemistry between mahesh and sonali, and their characters! Always love to see a goofy mahesh who can thread the line between being unserious/light-hearted and being responsible/assuring.
Also appreciate how women are centered so much in the movie. They make the important decisions, drive important plot points and Murari's relationships with them define huge part of who he is. Sonali's Vasu, like a lot of KV's women in that era, refreshingly stands the test of time and is probably even ahead. Gladly surprised by the rewatch value of this movie. ofcourse, special mention to Manisharma music and bgm.
