A completely horned up Olympian Michael Douglas teaches me to never give up. be it making love to your ex wife who may or may not of made love with you boss, or falling down in a big pile of leaves durng the Olympics this guy never quits and I think he died because of it.
It ain’t about how fast you can run…
On the heels of Rocky, Running stars a young Michael Douglas as a man losing in life, committed to proving there’s something he won’t give up on in an attempt to win the missus back. Winning a marathon. Essentially it’s Run Fatboy Run minus the humour.
I think this is a bit of a forgotten gem. I watched it on a cruddy looking 4:3 DVD format which certainly isn’t the best. In my opinion, Running deserves a remastered release from some boutique distributor or something because it’s not without merit.
Although derivative, it is an earnest film. I loved the bit when Douglas kicks off at the job centre. Douglas is also giving probably…
40th anniversary viewing.
I might be one of a dozen moviegoers who actually saw this in its initial release in 1979.
And I might be one of the three viewers who admire it despite its low-budget melodramatics. For me, its final minutes are as emotionally involving as the final round in Rocky. If you're a Michael Douglas fan, this is a must-see. Nothing else he's ever done is as physically punishing as his work in Running.
Inexplicable.
via DVD.
Low key running Movie with Michael Douglas. I enjoyed it enough, but the Movie seems very invested in the wonky relationship he has with his ex-wife more than anything else. Still, Douglas makes it work, and you do root for him by the end.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Distance, my friends.
Here's how it was portrayed:
• the sequence when he fell: less than 1k away from winning
• the sequence to the finish line: an additional 15k
WHY
Besides- the character was finally doing something for himself. Wanna have him fall? Fine, make it minor and have him get up and keep the lead. Based on the book or not, that athlete was underestimated and treated poorly by EVERYONE in almost every scene. Alright- his people don't like him. WE GET IT!!!!!!
FUCK THIS SHIT!!! I'M FUMING!!!!
He made it to the Olympics as a MARATHON RUNNER!!!! THAT'S 42.195 KILOMETRES!!!!!! HE HAS PERSISTENCE ALREADY!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!
PS: You can tell Douglas really put in the work, training and acting his socks off. He ran like a beast. Simply amazing performance.
It wasn’t Rocky that changed the course of the sports movie, it was the sequels. Rocky was Marty with some boxing – and Running, released just a few months after Rocky II hit cinemas, is primarily a middle-class divorce drama (as was popular at the time) with some running. And maybe that’s why it’s fallen off the radar when it comes to Michael Douglas movies. You can see aspects of Douglas roles to come in his white-collar dropout with two kids and divorce papers that he doesn’t want to sign. You can definitely see some of William Foster, his Falling Down character, when he blows up in an unemployment office (fortunately, the running allows him to immediately let off steam).…
Kind of a Rocky knockoff but with running. Decent sports film that came out 3 years after the Montreal Olympics were the events were depicted. They used actual marathon footage from that event in this film. Look for a young Giancarlo Esposito in what I believe was his first film role, Eugene Levy in a cameo, and also a pre-SNL Robin Duke.
Resembles an SCTV parody even before an over-ripe Eugene Levy turns up.
Heart warming story that ends up heart wrenching. Then fucking inspiring. Damn I was crying. Then I was ready to run thru a fucking wall. Can't believe MD created the viral video.
