Cliff receives an unusual 18th birthday gift from his younger sister — marijuana, alcohol, a subway token and the mission to lose his virginity. This results in Cliff meeting a young street hustler named Butch. At first, as Butch introduces Cliff to gay street life in Toronto, Cliff is excited by his new relationship. But as the two grow closer, he finds that Butch has problems, including drug addiction, that are cause for serious concern.

I’m taking an online class on sports films, and we were supposed to watch Sugar (2008) today... which is about baseball. the professor linked us to this.
Honestly, what a crazy thing to accidently watch. I’m cry-laughing at the thought of a bunch of jocks watching this waiting for a baseball scene.
the plot is really dumb and fucked up, the dialogue is horrible... the rape scene was sad and gross... It was funny at first just in this context but I’m really grateful lgbt+ cinema is moving in a better direction these days.

Lo-fi in a way that reminds me Todd Verow’s Frisk (1995) and early Gregg Araki movies. It’s just as horny too, which was nice.
watched it in 144p - the way god intended
I caught this one randomly on IFC in 2009 or so, it has stuck with me for a while and I think it's worth checking out.
Low budget Canadian cinema has my entire heart.
While this may not be a great, movie by most people’s standards, my own included to an extent, I feel if you’ve ever known anyone like Butch you will at least connect with it on some level. His complete descent at the end of the film is what turned my opinion of it around, it was really well done and almost made me tear up. I also just love how blunt and dry the characters in this are, it’s very much giving Toronto New Wave despite coming out in the early 2000s. It’s like an extra low budget Don McKellar movie.
I have seen a lot of comparisons to Gregg Araki’s films…

beautiful & tragic. saw alot of myself in this movie, albeit having a very different life from the characters. the fact that andre noble died a few weeks after the release of the movie has my heart so heavy.
