Ба, G, A Última Vingança
If you're thinking of putting this on for the 'ferocious granny' like I did just put on the last 10 minutes. Unless you consider grumping and fucking ferocious.
This Canadian revenge film tries to steamroll ya in Rolling Thunder mode - less action, more simmer, letting just the knowledge of danger build a world of suspense around these characters. Shame it doesn't quite nail the recipe though for a satisfying thriller.
The G is the nickname for the tough old Ann Hunter, who out of the blue one night is taken from her home, along with her ailing husband, and locked up in a retirement home. They're victims of a corrupt conservatorship scheme where paid off doctors deem the elderly incompetent so these scumbag businessmen can come along and declare themselves guardians, throw them in a home, and steal all their assets.
Of course, this film is called…
Amazing revenge film

Taking a great actor, famous for stealing films in small roles, and building a film around them is almost always a great idea. Right away, you have something different, especially when you’re making genre movies. Already, you have something deconstructive and atypical: a different energy than your traditional lead actor would bring — and a reminder of how excellent these character actors are.
This film is built around Dale Dickey, you’ll know her from a bunch of stuff (what comes to mind for me first is her being the best part of Hell or High Water, brief but brilliant).…
The bad guys in this have such a cold hearted dastardly scam.

I can't see any circumstance under which pissing off Dale Dickey would be a good idea.
Great to see her snag a couple of lead roles in the last couple of years or so. That's the thing about these awesome character actors - you put them at the head of a film and they're often even better than normal. I hope it continues and does so in films as generally good as The G.
There were points in Karl R. Hearne's film that felt rushed or as though was a jump in story, yet the actual narrative itself is strong and comes together well near its ending. It seems quite a few people were expecting some…

M.kay !!!!!
Dale Dickey is angry. She looks kinda pissed throughout this movie. And you don't want to get on her bad side. She has friends. And even without her friends she's more than capable of shooting you in the kneecaps.
But don't go into this expecting an action film. It's a movie about horrible people who take advantage of elderly people by using loopholes in the law. And its about Dale Dickey seething. And then learning to let go. And then getting pushed too far.
It's a surprisingly slow movie. But it allows you to sink in and get invested in the characters. Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of how it was all cut together. So many fake outs, loose ends, and very obvious character turns.
It's ok though. Cause Dale Dickey carries it all on her back. With a little help from her Canadian accented grand daughter.
Wow. You have to see The G.
I do love a great revenge movie and this one has it in droves. Dale Dickey is absolutely amazing as Anna who in herself is not a nice person but when her and her husband are evicted from their house and put in a care home without them knowing (it will become clear how when you watch the film) they are ill treated and along with her granddaughter, she tries to find a way out and seek revenge on her captors.
This is an outstanding thriller which I could rant on and on about for ages, but see it for yourself when it comes out later this year.
A violent, melancholic revenge thriller with potent social commentary. Genuinely a frightening prospect that parts of this film could, and does, happen to older people. Dale Dickey is fantastic as the titular belligerent and ‘ruthless’ yet vulnerable and regretful ‘G’. An interesting take on the revenge thriller. The tone isn’t as fun as some of the more rudimentary or cliche films in this genre (which I think is a good thing and fits with the tone and the story) but it does have the cathartic moments you long for.
I would refrain saying that I have “diva worship” for Dale Dickey but I would say I have a certain “diva appreciation”. She’s a broad I love seeing in things and I loved seeing her be the star 🥰
