I enjoyed The Gig. You see, I play in bands as a side hustle and I could fully relate to the band musician relationships and dynamics of gigging. Sometimes the band leader over sells the gig to us band members. Yep, been there. Actually was there earlier today with a gig in the bay area, in the rain and wind with no shelter, standing in line for my ‘free’ wine during our short 3 minute break between sets. Three minutes? Give me a break and where in the hell is that beer tent? I digress.

A charming film about 5 amateur musicians, who all work 9-5 jobs, that decide to take a 2 week gig in a remote resort to live out their life long dream. It has a lot more great comedic beats than I was expecting and pretty quickly you feel the long bond that these friends have as we go on this fun road trip. A substitute bass player who joins the group (played by the charismatic Cleavon Little from Blazing Saddles) causes some initial friction and I wasn't sure where this plotline would lead but he ends up being one of the best characters in the film. A film so authentic, it is like a cross between a documentary and a long anecdote you tell a friend after a few drinks, "Did i ever tell you about the time some friends and i...." The film concerns a group of middle aged and middle class fellows who get together at night to play jazz, and then land themselves a real gig at a resort. First they are forced to confront their own fears before going, then they have to adjust to a professional musician who fills in for one absent member. Each character is nicely drawn. Highly recommended.

The film is a very good character study of friends, dreams, and life all together.
