The filmmakers set out to make a horror-comedy with a lot of bad jokes and corny dialogue, but they cast Grace Jones as a nearly silent vampire goddess. So most scenes are these gritty neon frat comedy bits with a bit of blood and violence, but when she appears on screen, she brings actual menace. And suddenly the comedy part is muted by her power and the whole movie feels like an avant garde nightmare. The tonal shifts would ruin most movies, but here you're just so glad to be seeing Grace Jones menace these man-children that it works in the most bizarre way. Also, because nothing is played "normal", even in the comedy bits, the shift just serves to heighten how surreal the whole thing is. While I wish this were really just 90 minutes of Grace Jones silently terrorizing men, I don't mind that we got this instead.
I was pleasantly surprised! It was fun and didn’t take themselves too seriously. It doesn’t hurt that must of movie takes place in a strip club but less nudity than you would expect. Give it a try!
Super fun undervalued popcorn shenanigans, the kind of movie thats even better with good company. Not legendary or anything but I love the cast and the colors.
Grace Jones <3
I don’t even have anything funny to say. Vampire strippers, Grace jones dancing in full body paint done by Keith Haring, amazing soundtrack, stellar outfits, classic 80’s neon up lighting. It’s just perfect.
the power of a homoerotic friendship lit by a cup of trix yogurt
the only thing i remember about this movie are the parts with grace jones, and i will remember those for the rest of my life
Spooktober II: To Hell With the 80s
Serving in many ways as an indirect (or perhaps direct?) influence for Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Til Dawn", the film revolves around this group of horny frat boys who seek to hire a stripper, only to have things go awry when the stripper they're looking to hire ends up being a vampire. Not only now they must try to survive from being killed by the vampire and her posse of hoodlums, mostly vampires, but also a gang of thugs.
I doubt that Scorsese's After Hours was much of an influence considering that it came out only a year before this one was released, but much of the depiction of a chaotic night is…
Atmospheric horror comedy in "Fright Night" style with a mysterious Grace Jones as a lascivious performing vampire. Humorous sayings, slimy effects and a colorful bunch of bizarre characters ensure great 80s trash entertainment.
This was decent enough. There is a lot of wasted potential in my opinion. I actually share most of the same criticisms my watch partner had. The humour is hit-or-miss (it borders on cringe at times), what little gore there is isn't all that spectacular, and the most glaring shortcoming of all being that Grace Jones does not have a more prominent role.
I did like all the neon. And Dedee Pfeiffer of course. ♥️
Eighties horror comedy, mixing teen humour with vampire stuff in a sleazy strip club, taking obvious influence from the likes of American Werewolf and Fright Night - though the genre mix is not handled as well. It has plenty going for it, however. Grace Jones as the head of a vampire clan is the major standout - even though she doesn't actually speak a word. The lighting scheme is pure Argento tribute - plenty of green, red and purple neon - it looks very nice. There's some good practical effects too - the vampires look great. What brings it down is the plotting - it's far too long. The first act sets things up well, but theres no clear story…
We're living in 1986 while Grace Jones's striptease is living in 3086
no special effects needed, grace jones can just do all that herself. boy, i've never seen two frat boys more painfully homoerotically obsessed with each other. and that's saying a lot
