    Anatomy of a Fall (1950)™️

But seriously, though this was produced in a different time and place, so much of this film resonates with our current climate nearly 75 years later.

The general disillusionment coming off the heels of WWII couldn’t help but inspire generational doubt and mistrust in one another. I feel that deeply in our modern era. I can only hope that we learn similar lessons depicted here and don’t let that mistrust consume us.

    The Haunting

Is it a little cheesy, over the top, and melodramatic? Yes, absolutely. Is it clearly a seminal work in the psychological horror genre? Yes, absolutely. The way they play with lighting, shadows, and shots that make the house look like it is literally swallowing its cast is phenomenal. Mike Flanagan’s miniseries is stronger, but he’s standing on the shoulders of giants here. Also, Nel is riddled with anxiety and it is so relatable.

The amount of whimsy on display here is staggering. Absolutely classic Disney here from the music to the animation to the fairy tale adaptation. Very refreshing to see King Arthur as an honest awkward teen instead of an indomitable man of action. Can’t say I expected such an extended sequence with a horny squirrel, though.

Elf is my favorite Christmas movie of all time, but this is a close second.
