A Man Escaped 1956
A modern day filmmaker would likely be tempted to use tools to remove a story like this from reality as much as one could. Montage, creative sound design, cinematography, a lot more music. But instead we get a story with a strong emphasis on reality. Nothing is over the top. No moment is played specifically for entertainment. We are engaged by the circumstances alone and how the actors behave in them. If this came out today, the entire movie would likely play out in the first 30 min. But the time it takes is a big part of the reality it wants us to live in.
