Very cute. Very Zen. We’re all in the same boat.

It definitely does not look like this movie was made for less than $15 million so that’s pretty amazing. That said, it also is no Paul Thomas Anderson larger-than-life historical fiction biopic. It wants to be though.

Gorgeously shot. Lovingly observed subjects. An amazing first feature. This felt like Dazed and Confused from the girls POV. I think that’s a compliment to both Linklater and the directors of this film, but it’s also sad to realize how little has changed in the 40 years since that earlier movie was set. Both focus on the lives of teens in Texas where toxic masculinity, drinking, drug use, and friendship abound. And both end with a feeling of celebration, nostalgia, and potential.

This was a good movie but didn’t have the emotional impact it could have. The framing device/narration detracted to me. I thought Kate Winslet was her normal fantastic self. It was nice to see Alexander Skaarsgard not play a villain, but it was not a juicy part. Andy Samberg also did a good job. If this weren’t female-led (producer, director, lead role), I’d say this is a typical Oscar-bait war movie like the The Darkest Hour, The King’s Speech, or 1917. Overall, the photographs were incredible and this lended context to them well – maybe I’ll read the book.
