It's easy to take for granted how much of a feat making this film was. Walt Disney and his team knew the stakes were high and they really put their animussies into it; beautiful animation, a simple well paced story, charming characters and a fabulous soundtrack put the proof in the pudding.
It's not just one of the most important films ever created, but an incredible one that stands the test of time.
Thankfully, no one has dared to commit sacrilege and rema-Oh. Oh no.
👏THIS👏 is the Looney Tunes film we needed.
This film isn't just a banger 50s sci-fi homage, it's a love letter to Looney Tunes at large.
It's abundantly clear the crew (from Looney Tunes Cartoons on Max) understand the source material on a far deeper level than many of the teams who've inherited it since the golden age... Especially when you factor in how these characters were built for short form storytelling, which any lesser crew could have struggled to utilize…
Wild Robot has plenty to like- notably the stellar visuals- but it's begging to be simplified. Not just in terms of plot presentation, but dialogue- much of which felt 'first draft'. Unlike the book's more concise approach, there's a lot of describing-what's-on-screen in scenes that'd be otherwise fine as silent. Though there's good stuff here and the film does has something to say, it's often crushed under its own speech bubble.
