Ali & Emmi’s relationship, defying social convention, is the single facet of this film which the film itself is uncynical about. Every other encounter, reaction, response & gesture is in some way a product of that society’s exclusionary power over violation of the taboo.
Fassbinder consistently uses doorways to frame Alli & Emmi and constrict the spaces they’re allowed to inhabit.. and consistently uses the silent, unyielding gaze of the crowds at bars & cafes to stand in for us,…
