This is either liberal Zionism or a critique so veiled its use vanishes

Nails a lot of what makes historical epics so formally pleasing, although not consistently enough to mask a distinct lack of understanding or even conviction in its analysis

Also I had a microsleep during the critical scene between Laszlo and van Buren towards the end - literally just for that scene. Was extremely confused when the big confrontation happens at the end and eventually just assumed it was an artistic choice lol

The shipwreck of a society, forcing an immediate and total change in the mode of production: sadly only possible at the scale of allegory (but useful to think through all the same)

Goes hard on the daddy issues with Captain Pellew, a natural and inevitable development for a series that could well be the most expensive softcore gay porn ever made

    ★★

I'm convinced it's impossible to successfully homage Possession and that anyone who tries is arrogant. I'm basing this theory on two films: Climax, and now... moustachioed Nosferatu

A lot of really thankless performances; Depp and Skarsgard are both good but that unfortunately doesn't change the movie they're being good in. Willem Dafoe is very shit in this and I'm bored of him just playing his persona in everything

The film doesn't commit to the psychosexual angle enough. It also can't…
