Emilia Pérez 2024
I’d usually be well-disposed to surreal, fantastical films on unlikely subjects but I felt quite mystified by this one. The music is rather insipid (and some of the singing is outright flat), and the characters feel quite thinly drawn. It’s stylish and visually inventive, and the climactic scenes are much more involving. Altogether the story stops and starts, and it’s oddly naive and sentimental. And yet it won numerous prizes and praise from Guillermo del Toro and Denis Villeneuve. What am I missing?

What a performance from Alicia Vikander!
This surprising, darkly comic film appears at first to be about the hell of raising children. But ultimately I think it’s about maintaining hope (or honesty, or comforting fictions) in the face of climate collapse and loss. With awkward-as-hell, unpredictable moments at every turn, and Vikander as a sinister assessor play-pretending to be a difficult child, it’s a refreshing response to other SF films such as Blade Runner 2049 and Logan’s Run.
