  some truly magical moments in this (baking number, slo-mo scenes) amidst some truly cursed imagery (red horses, frog-conjuring mouth, the donkey skin ofc).

  In contrast to other Cronenberg films I've seen, Scanners doesn't seem to explore too much the ramifications and the philosophy of the world it has created. Instead, it mainly felt that it was just a mediocre action movie with characters that happen to have psychic powers. But hey, at least the explosions were cool.

  This movie nails the 70s horror aesthetic. That combined with Ti West's modern direction was just a delight to watch. It was such a slow burn, but in a good, spine-chilling way. We basically spend most of the movie watching Jocelyn Donahue alone exploring a seemingly normal house. Yet the anticipation and mystery of it all created one of the creepiest atmospheres I've experienced on film. And to top it off, the climax pays off big time.
