This movie couldn’t decide if it was a documentary or a drama, which shouldn’t be surprising given that the director worked on the documentary of the same name. Chris Lemon’s wife so obviously serves as an emotional beat in the plot with no other substance and her acting was quite bad. Most of the other performances were very flat with the exception of Simu Liu and some minor supporting actors.

The set design and visuals were actually quite good, which is one of the only redeeming qualities. The story itself is gripping, but could’ve been written, performed and directed so much better.

Really well executed film. Takes a fairly basic premise and nails it. Builds tension very well, nails comedic moments, and hits the emotional beats hard. Excellent performances, banging soundtrack, and great direction.

There was a lot to like about this movie: interesting characters, great acting, fun visuals, and an artistic angle that I personally enjoyed. A horrific exploration of 1950s American psych wards. But really an exploration of what makes people human, how we define mental illness, and the power-dynamics inherent in the patient-caregiver relationship. Nicholsan’s performance and the supporting cast are all remarkable. Sound design is somehow one of the worst I’ve ever heard. Does the source material justice.
