Death of a Unicorn 2025
not too surprised to see this was a debut feature, as there’s an amateur quality to the camera where you can see the inherent beauty of the landscapes, where you are getting some tonally great performances from the cast (Grant and Poulter the clear standouts, though Carrigan and Mani are both strong in supporting roles), but it often feels so lifeless. not that it isn’t without joy or an underwhelming watch, just that the film rarely elevates itself. does gain…

Unbreakable 2000
interesting to return to this after it was retrofitted as the start of a trilogy, not because it fills out how much of an origin story it is, but because you can see the connective ties emotionally that Shyamalan explores in Split and Glass all present here. the domestic drama and character study elements are at the core of this film, and the way Shyamalan toys with the tension between the real and superhero worlds mirrors the turmoil in David’s life. also helps that his camerawork is on another level here, arguably is still his best looking and most visually daring of his career.

Nope 2022
a title that says it all. while the film, in its hodgepodge of genre toying, reaches and prods at more ideas than it reasonably cares to tackle, it ultimately feels like a mess of leftovers spewed from the maw. all the depth of a sketchbook, with the expected gaps that invite exploration, but end in speculation. i can see the tissue holding it all together, and the performers make it bearable for the most part, yet even Peele’s assured camera in its most free moments gets engulfed.

Booksmart 2019
There's this thing at KFC called a famous bowl that has, like, chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, cheese, and gravy all mixed together, which are all elements that are, on their own, varying levels of good, but then you mix them all together in to one abomination and realize that you are just eating garbage. This film is kind of like that.
