I just realized that one of the reasons why this movie is so brilliant is because it's about somebody (i.e. like David Fincher) who is utterly obsessive about detail not being able to make an impossible story cohere. Using meticulous order to render chaos and disorder is one of my favorite things in fiction.

In a Lonely Place 1950
Several lists call this the best noir of all time but it was just okay.

Paint Drying 2016
david lynch, the best to ever do it. the thing that people misunderstand about his work is that it's just "weird," as opposed to full of really elegant (if elliptical) inner logic. also, the secret ingredient was empathy. i wrote a whole long thing about mulholland dr. and somehow missed the point that that is what really makes it tick, it's spot-welded to what it feels like to be excluded. and despite some if its more camp elements, the elephant man is full of empathy for its title character and wrestles (I think) pretty deeply with the ethics of treating him like a spectacle. rip.

Maps to the Stars 2014
This might be the most insane Cronenberg movie and I have seen Crimes of the Future.
