    Maybe it’s just because I watched The Substance yesterday, but it’s so nice to watch a movie that has respect for its audience and offers characters with humanity.

    This could have easily not worked without all elements coming together in the delicate final product, but the cinematography and the naturalistic performances of the two leads were the standouts.

    Deserves a rewatch ASAP.

    • I was looking forward to this one. I had hoped for an elevated take on body horror that elevated the genre in some way. Instead I got yet another dumb horror movie with a screenplay that has no faith in its audience.

    Thoughts:

    • Strong debut by Doucouré with beautiful cinematography and excellent acting (those 650 auditions paid off).

    • The plot unfolds pretty much as you’d imagine and follows a typical coming-of-age narrative. Doucouré mostly takes a naturalistic approach that doesn’t allow for great complexity or depth, but the truthfulness of the characters and environment carry the film along nicely and there are some moments of emotion and transcendence that, um, elevate this above a predictable, if solid, experience.
