Misaki 1 & 2 are extremely low budget short films—the mystery is not all that elaborate and the kills are not invented. However, they’re both incredibly entertaining and the actors really give it their all! Especially the killer that’s revealed at the end, he really went all out!

I may have rated these 2 1/2 stars but there was something so charming about them that I went with 3 instead.

Koji Shiraishi referencing his own movie here—Ju-Rei (2004)—was FABULOUS.

The film affected me much more than I expected. I think the tonal shift will turn a lot of people off but trust me, Shiraishi-san knew exactly what he was doing.

Eerie, violent, goofy, over the top, upsetting, and endearing. Basically an amalgamation of all of Shiraishi’s best trademarks.

It’s a haunting and campy roller coaster ride with a heartwarming message.

I wasn’t really familiar with the character and I know people were upset when they found out that the film didn’t take place in El Paso but it still hit home in so many other ways. Anyone who grew up in a Hispanic household will appreciate what was done here, but I hope that those outside of our culture will find it endearing as well. Solid superhero flick underneath it all, but maybe I’m biased.

I’m not sure why so many people are disappointed by the plot of this film? The franchise is not exactly adored for having intricate stories. I absolutely love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and no sequel (or requel) will ever live up to the hellish nightmare that Tobe Hooper created, but that’s OKAY. I thought this was a fairly solid entry, definitely enjoyed it more than the last two or three flicks in the series. I do wish we could…
