Life's too short to waste on bad films. No comic-book flicks, nothing colorized.

Though a classic with a sterling cast led by the dazzling Davis, it does seem to telegraph its plot shifts a bit often including and especially in the final scene. That might explain the slight sluggishness at times. Or maybe theater types are just tedious. George Sanders at his Sanders finest and Baxter gets the job done.

You can tell this is perfect film in about 30 seconds, just by the look. Soon the performances reinforce that along with the dialogue. An unusually rich plot throughout with a flawless cast, from the ubersassy Eve Arden to a remarkable teenage Ann Blythe. All under direction from the titan Curtiz. It restarted Crawford's career but that's just the icing on the pie.

Fine cast, solid direction and some super lighting and angles give this film credibility as top quality noir. More than a few details are far-fetched including Ella's Raines's unrequited, long-smoldering love for her boss Curtis and Tone's beyond-intricate cover-up involving potential witnesses who saw the Phantom Lady. But the film is too good to quibble, i.e. drummer Elijah Cook Jr., and Raines somehow carries the whole thing, all with those incredibly captivating eyes.

Remarkably fresh, honest and ahead of its time, especially for Hollywood in 1945. Wilder uses his comic timing with his dramatic motivations to create a morass that's quite real for his three main characters. Milland makes the most of his troubled Ivy dropout persona, while Wyman is all empathy.
