One of those films you watch and think to yourself "it's a miracle this exists at all." I have so many intense feelings about this film that one day I will put into a full essay. But for now I'll just say that for John Singleton to tell a story about violence that somehow avoids exploitative sensationalism, didacticism, and respectability, is a masterful dance that all (screen) writers should study.
This book is a favorite of mine, and a couple of months ago in anticipation of the film, I wrote about the societal significance of the story and how deftly it depicts the ways informal social networks enforce the boundaries of oppression.
