weird that this didn’t work as well for me as i thought it would i’m like the core target audience for a family drama about a girl-failure Going Through It. i would’ve loved slightly more comedy perhaps? it veered into like soap opera melodrama territory for me at times. and i didn’t love anne hathaways performance! maybe im just a contrarian, who knows.
the dishwasher sequence was SO effective though.

brushing up on my baker post oscars. besides anora, i’ve only seen florida project and now tangerine, but im sort of surprised by how earnest a filmmaker sean baker is. for all the discourse about how he’s like a gritty exploitation artist, theres always at least one scene that trades in hallmark movie levels of sincerity/borders on cliche (anora car scene, sindee putting lipstick on dina in the bathroom, many many moments of the florida project). not really a critique as it works for me personally but i guess not what i was expecting going into his work!
no one understands the american suburb quite like lynch. the scene where it all clicks for her was so honest to what it feels like to remember a repressed trauma i burst into tears and had to pause the movie. jesus christ.
