Almost (but not quite) a deliciously terrible gem. Mostly: totally incoherent. Saved (kinda?) by another hilariously OTT and delightfully camp performance by Bruce Payne. See also Passenger 57 for more of the same. His queer-coded anime villain vibes contrast nicely with the vacuum of man-meat energy of ‘The Boz’. 5 stars? 1 star? No stars?? Take your pick.
I tend to swing between this and Ace in the Hole as my fave Billy Wilder. And 2 more different vibes you could not get…on the surface. Ace in the Hole is, quite possibly, one of the most bitter, nasty and cynical movies made in Hollywood’s golden age. The Apartment is a beautiful miracle. As close to perfect in every department as films get. And you’ve got two of the most gorgeous and lovable leads ever seen in film. But…
A joy from start to finish. But, for those who haven’t seen it, it might be surprising to find that the Christmas aspects are only bookended at the very start and very finish. It ain’t really a Christmas movie at all. It’s a war movie. It’s about puttin’ on a show. And all the better for it. Terrific and very naturalistic performances throughout. And nobody better or more magnetic than Rosemary Clooney. Danny Kaye gets opportunities to be delightfully gay(e). And it’s beautifully shot and staged and paced. I mean, Michael Curtiz folks!
Sensational performances from the 3 leads. Beautifully shot and staged. The new year's eve scene near the start is just a marvellous example of how to manage and stage controlled chaos. So many moving parts. The sliding door elements...the ambiguous ending...it's just glorious.
