  Beautifully photographed like no other war movie before or since. One of a kind perspective on WWII that is masterfully written but lacks subtlety. Melodramatic to the point of being heavy handed.

  I didn't understand this movie when I watched it in the theater in 1998. I'm glad I re-watched it at an age I could understand it.
