A fascinating follow up to Eraserhead; Lynch’s first work to get Oscar attention, a star studded cast, and a bigger budget. Gorgeous visuals, an effective musical score, and top notch acting all work in service of an endearing and authentic portrayal of John Merrick’s life. The Romeo and Juliet scene makes me cry every time.
Lynch’s signature style and visual language takes a back seat to put its central characters in the spotlight, and it’s a poignant, emotionally charged story…
What a debut. What a way to start a career. There is passion and love oozing from every frame, which is astounding because so many of those frames are deeply disturbing and upsetting. It’s an astounding achievement. Every choice feels deliberate and intentional, there is a steady hand holding the camera, and the narrative; and yet, this movie is a portrait of a young artist still venturing into the unknown, and finding his voice. So many seedlings found in this movie blossom beautifully throughout the rest of his filmography.
If S3 of Twin Peaks is a movie, it’s my favorite movie of the last decade. A true career retrospective and celebration of David Lynch.
