Having never heard of the Jesus movement, I thought the movie did a brilliant job of exploring the complexities of the religious revival. Jonathan Roumie gave my favorite performance as Lonnie Frisbee, a charismatic hippie who reinvents worship for the younger generation. Greg acts as a surrogate for the audience, giving a perspective into what it was like being a youth during the 60s. After finding no fulfillment in drugs and the philosophy of the counterculture movement, Greg joins Smith's…
Dallas Jenkins' Christmas movie is endearing, and reminds us why we celebrate the holiday in the first place. Of course, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is far from the first movie to have this theme. What makes the movie special is the way Jenkins approaches it. As the Herdman children participate in the Christmas pageant, Jenkins illustrates that the Christmas story was not a neat, scripted production. Mary and Joseph's circumstances were far from ideal, and all they had to go off of is faith that somehow the Savior would come into the world. A great movie to watch during the holiday season.
I loved this Coen Brothers' interpretation of Homer's Odyssey! The Southern music is a definite highlight. Seeing George "Babyface" Nelson was an unexpected but enjoyable character in the movie and fit well in the 1930s setting. The reimagining of Polyphemus, the Sirens, and Menelaus worked great in the story. George Clooney and Tim Blake Nelson are perfectly cast in their roles as Ulysses and Delmar, respectively. In addition to being a version of the Odyssey, it captured both the good and the bad of Southern culture. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves period pieces.
Bonhoeffer is a moving historical drama, showing what it means to be courageous in the face of evil. The acting, the cinematography, the score- all of it was brilliant. I'll admit that I don't know much about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and there are likely some inaccuracies in the depiction of his life. However, that doesn't take away from the over all message of the movie. I highly recommend giving it a watch.
