    For my money, probably one of the most essential iterations on the “filmmaking and spectatorship as an act of violation and violence” thesis, I think in no small part because it finds its footage in the genre of the Roman Western. Whether it be through intense splicing, aggressive moment, or casting shadows in the negative, Tscherkassky strips all entities away from their environments and trappings, until even that becomes insufficient and the only thing left is to enforce the end reel. Greek tragedy doesn’t even come close
