There have been few times where I’ve watched or experienced something that made me think that straying so magnificently, and arguably, dangerously, far from source material might be for the best. This film’s ability to teeter the line between paying homage and circumventing expectations, along with its annoyingly impressive inability to drop a myriad of bits, makes for a film that’s frustratingly enjoyable to watch.

The colors (and lack thereof) painting this hauntingly beautiful Shakespearean landscape had me at a loss for words. Dialogue akin to poetry and a cast of almost flawless performance made for some incredible dramaticism you could only get from a Robert Eggers dreamscape.

This movie succeeds in toeing the thin, but beautiful, line of camp and layman’s horror. Boasting some of the most creative horror sequences and so-tasteless-it’s-tasteful jumpscares, this second entry perfects what the first couldn’t and delivers and experience that is great for the casual scare-seeker, while providing the expectation subversion that the aficionado craves.

This movie serves as a reminder that symbolism can exist within the woodworks of a by-the-books slasher. A blend of genuine humor, incredibly well done shots and eye-pleasing angles, and some genuinely unsettling visuals result in a whirlwind of almost complete cinematic excellence.
