Ms. Purple 2019
Like Chon's GOOK, the direction here is a bit heavy-handed and teeters on the edge of being a fictional pathography. Issues with motivations and continuity add to the distraction, pushing the audience further away from having any empathy for the characters. Allusions to Wong Kar-wai's use of step-printing and a beautifully haunting score feel unearned. All this said, Chon does have a vision and knows what he wants the viewer to feel. Here's hoping his execution catches up to his intentions.
