Satan's Blood 1978
An isolated mansion, hooded cultists, softcore sleaze, murder, suicide, flares, big hair, a scary-as-shit doll, a downbeat ending. This one has everything you need from a 70s occult Euro-horror.

The Electric State 2025
Plodding, generic, mindless entertainment aimed at the masses. Lacks depth or substance.
The visuals are good, though, and capture the aesthetic of the graphic novel - I just wish they'd also tried to replicate its sense of melancholy.

Nineteen Eighty-Four 1984
Pale faces, clattering machines, broken buildings. Constant coughing, drab overalls, children spying on their parents. Party rule. Fear and repression. A deep yearning for green grass and blue sky.
A grim, grimy, pessimistic adaptation of Orwell's classic. Burton is chilling. It isn't entirely succesful but it's a worthy and admirably bleak attempt to film a difficult book that remains far too relevant in these troubling times.

Heretic 2024
Tense, intelligent, compelling. Thematically, it reminded me of The Vanishing crossed with the philosophical aspects of Martyrs, with a bit of Barbarian thrown into the mix.
For the first hour, I thought this was going to be a masterpiece, but the second half of the film isn't quite as strong as the first - like Mr Reed's "iterations", each twist of the narrative slightly dilutes the message. It's still a very good film, though.
