Good courtroom drama! The unconvincing performances by some of the supporting cast didn't take away from the excellent ones of Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette. Doesn't reinvent the wheel but it doesn't need to.

As It Burns 2023
Such an odd film. A 'dramatic' love story that lacks any chemistry combined with a criminal investigation led by an incompetent and unprofessional police department, although I don't think they were intended to be presented as such. A huge swing and it missed everything!
The motivations of the main characters either didn't make any sense or weren't even explored so the whole thing lacked any sort of tension. I think the film was taking itself super seriously, but it came…

The Delta 1996
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The 16mm was pretty jarring at first, and in some shots it was really distracting how grainy it was, but I grew to appreciate how it made the whole film feel very unsettling. There was tension between Lincoln and Minh the entire time that made for a very odd and uncomfortable dynamic, so the 'shock' ending did not feel like it came out of nowhere. Even so, the film meanders slowly through its runtime and ultimately left me feeling cold.

Joan of Arc 1900
I can't believe I just watched a film that was released in 1900! It was so apparent while watching how ambitious Méliès was; the sets and costumes feel grand and theatrical. The colouring is obviously quite inconsistent across the film's length but it's bright and eye-catching in a way many modern films unfortunately are not. Pretty hard to follow if you're not familiar with the story. The opening and closing scenes were really beautiful, almost like paintings. Even 125 years ago directors understood the power of a striking final shot!
