    Catching up on some Spielbergs I haven’t revisited in a while. 

    This has its flaws, but it perfectly preserves the post-9/11 fear and paranoia that held the U.S. in its grip at the time. In fact, it’s sort of timeless, because that fear and paranoia is still calling the shots today.

    Perhaps Spielberg’s most tonally inconsistent film? Moments swing wildly from being affective to over-the-top to dull, culminating in something that’s more bizarre than it is engaging. Richard Dreyfuss’s quips and snark aren’t as charming as the movie thinks they are, and Brad Johnson is an absolute dud. 

    On the plus side, Holly Hunter and John Goodman steal the entire show. The aerial firefighting sequences are truly impressive, and I can even appreciate some of the afterlife mythos involved (and hey,…

    Equal parts brutal and affectionate. A day-in-the-life workplace dramedy and an unflinching, honest immigrant story. Sets the stakes in Scene One so that everything that follows - from the extreme to the mundane - has greater meaning. 

    Is it the “most New York movie ever?” It certainly reflects the New York I’ve lived in the best.
