I’m not usually a massive Nicole Kidman lover, but this was such a great performance. The ending suggests that her BDSM is conceptual, but it seemed a bit neat and seemed to iron out the messy/real elements of the relationship. Thinking of Miranda July’s recent book All Fours, which has the protagonist choosing a bold new sexual direction after losing her sexual energy for her long term partner, this ending felt very chaste, and perhaps unnecessarily pathologised. This movie was not for me, it felt like the most cliched arthouse Italian film of all time! Tedious, patriarchal, over-indulgent, “philosophical”, cloying, gross. The Naples setting was by far the best part of this ridiculous and pompous movie. If you want a 2024 film about a young woman’s sexual journey created by a male director, watch Anora instead.
