How We Got Here 2023

A Woman Is a Woman 1961
Anna Karina performs femininity with otherworldly beauty and grace, despite the misogynistic traps she is surrounded by.
The divertissement of the final jeu des mots says it all:
- Tu est une infâme.
- Non, je suis une femme! The film’s representation of gender roles is executed with irony, wittiness, and dramatic tension (and a good amount of cringeworthy self indulgence as well ) but ultimately reinforces patriarchal cliches without any redemption.
Not-so-fun fact: that same year, after repeating obsessively the line “I want a baby” in the film, Anna Karina became pregnant by Godard, only to suffer a miscarriage.
