Every character makes reference to themself or someone else pooping in their pants within the first 30 minutes of this movie.

There’s an SCTV sketch with Eugene Levy playing Gino Vanelli in concert and every time the camera cuts away and then back he’s hairier and hairier until he’s just a hairy monkey-man. That’s what parts of this movie felt like.

David Lynch is my favorite director. Even at his most avant garde, there is a humanist streak that rips through his work and occasionally rears its head to create a sophisticated portrait of compassion like in The Elephant Man.

The Elephant Man is one of his most accessible (narratively speaking) and it also is his most humanist, compassionate, loving film, pitting the ills of society against the unmatched power of human empathy. As John Merrick, John Hurt gives one of the best performances in all of film, using every muscle in his body to emote and bring to life a character that is emotionally complex.

The pope that dies at the beginning is credited as "DEAD POPE". And I, for one, think that's pretty cool.
