Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula has inspired innumerable film adaptations since the earliest years of the cinema. Filmmakers who have been drawn to this story include some of the artform’s most visionary directors, such as F. W. Murnau, Werner Herzog, and Francis Ford Coppola. When I first heard that Robert Eggers would joining this company with an adaptation of Murnau’s 1922 version, I had mixed feelings.
