    HILLARIOUS AND TOUCHING!

I had no expectations going into this. The director's statement is so vague and bland and the premise isn't all that exciting. But very quickly from the beginning, the film is quippy and light on its feet. If I had to describe it to someone, I'd call it THE OFFICE but make it a road trip set in rural China.

An eccentric middle aged man (Tang), divorced, and daughter who committed suicide three years prior runs a…

On one hand I get it, on the other - this is a total mess

This is an instance of one of those films where the themes are very obvious and is technically proficient but I just don't resonate with any of it. I overall agree with the sentiments made by the film too.

The last 15 minutes are poorly handled and the end credits music make this seem like it's supposed to be a happy ending.

I LOVE THIS FILM and I LOVE THIS DOCUMENTARY.

This only made my infatuation with the film ever more potent. How completely mystical was it that the actors suddenly starting crying out of nowhere on the final shooting day? Or the absolute precision with which Iwai directors his actors? Or the excess detail that went into that choir song? Or those 64 takes?

Probably the most surprising fact was that this film was crowdsourced through a forum on the cusp…

    TIFF #3

Was really hoping for a Moonlight/Call Me By Your Name-esque queer flick but this sadly didn't deliver. It had its moments but the dialogue is too clunky and the character beats lack a tempo and feel forced. There's so much nuance missing and the "magical realism" bit at the end was overly contrived. The film's title promises so much and I wanted to to be incredible but it comes off as a typical Netflix/Disney/hallmark style of film.

Great soundtrack tho, brought the 80s summer in Texas vibes.
