I didn’t appreciate the movie enough because of how uncomfortable it first made me, until I watched “The Horror of Girlhood | Explored through Valerie and her Week of Wonders”, a video essay on YouTube by Final Girl Digital.
And yes, the director is a man, but the writer of the story is a woman, and it’s something most people don’t pay attention to.

It makes the viewer uncomfortable, but that is probably meant to be the essence of the movie, as it’s clearly not made to be watched lightly.
Through this movie, Bertolucci explores the influence the neglect of children has on human behaviour, emotion and sexuality.
Might leave an unsettling feeling because of the explicit, disgusting scenes and the clearly incestuous relationship in it, but i assume that is partly intentional on the director’s part.
I only dislike the way the whole message is so hidden behind disgusting scenes.Translated from by
