Alice in the Cities 1974
“that’s why you keep taking photos, they’re something you can hold on to, more evidence that it was you who saw things.”
a beautiful, poignant and melancholy film. amidst the sparse landscapes and cities absent of vibrancy, two souls fill the space with curiosity and pain in equal measure.

alexander pain’s talent at digging deep into the root of people’s repressed emotions and pain is actually unparalleled. teared up big time on the plane watching this.

I'm Still Here 2024
a gorgeously compelling, nuanced and affecting film. Fernanda Torres carries each shot with robust grace and strength. a harrowing account of police state authoritarianism (more valuable now than ever given the creepy rise of neo-fascism around the globe) and a moving and poignant portrayal of family, parenthood and grief. at times I felt a narrow focus on the middle class was a little restrictive of the potential potency of the story, so half a star taken off for that. the music and cinematography were just stupendous, too. a joy to watch what feels like a return of real cinema.
