i loved the Weirs Beach drive-in theatre in Laconia, New Hampshire so much as a kid, but the only film i remember actually seeing there was Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard which might’ve been the worst movie i’ve ever seen. i need to ask my sis if they remember what else we watched there. (UPDATE: sis says we watched Sausage Party. dear god.)

the line about people being desensitized to media was so ahead of its time. made me think of the…

electrifying and awe-inspiring. every single scene makes you think of your own mortality, the way we treat others, endless war and its impact on generational trauma, beauty and love and angels. the film somehow exists in the past, present and future simultaneously. German expressionism reverberates throughout. i was particularly moved by the scenes at the Berlin Public Library, never has a film captured the sensation of realizing that everyone exists in their own massive lives in their own borders than…

from my Over the Garden Wall review to this, sheesh, not the best combo for animated films. this was a visual headache, genuinely blurry and unintelligible for most of the run time, the backgrounds are so empty and lifeless. i love the story and the taoist lessons strewn throughout the film, and im sure im missing countless cultural references, but i can just tell that wouldn’t have saved this experience for me.

there is obviously still merit to checking out…

sleek, tight 90s are back. despite the runtime this took me a little longer than i expected to get into. but once the plot became clearer i was fully invested. definitely wish the ending was more satisfying, but this was thoroughly enjoyable, and i love Michael Fassbender.

i am proud of being Jewish, and this is a painful movie for me, pain being an preeminent theme of the film notwithstanding. i can appreciate the craft, which is undeniably beautiful, but if you’re going to stand for nothing, at least ask the right (or any!) questions.

i hope Corbet feels like he fits in with the auteurs he so desperately wants approval from. let’s just hope none of them think about the movie too hard.

film grain as an actor. google maps and a shopping plaza bench cast doubt on the familiar. the ocean in its negative beckons the call of the void. domineering and inhumane architecture… has it always been there? have i simply never noticed? i only find one species here. cinema!
