Always 1989
"I know now, that the love we hold back is the only pain that follows us here."
I know Always isn’t widely loved, but I can’t help but find it utterly charming and heartfelt. It’s easily my favorite Richard Dreyfuss performance—so full of warmth and sincerity. It is a film about love, made with love.
On a personal note, I learned that our family dog, Theia, passed away right after watching this, which makes it all the more resonant.
I will love you always and forever, Theia ❤️🐾

Five thoughts on this film:
1. Profoundly disturbing
2. There is a lot to chew on here (Adam & Eve, womb envy, misogyny, toxic masculinity, self-destruction)
3. Alex Garland is idiosyncratic
4. This film contains imagery so disturbing that it has burned into my brain permanently
5. Alex Garland is an artist who wants to challenge and intrigue the audienceTranslated from by -
