Demon Pond 1979
The synth soundtrack by Isao Tomita is perfect for this film and was a highlight.
When they appear, the special effects and visuals are ethereal and incredible! I kept getting a Twin Peaks-esque/soap opera vibe in terms of how dreamy things felt at times
Though the film has a slow start, everything gets more interesting when the goofy fish demons arrive. Given how lighthearted and almost hokey it began, Demon Pond has a surprisingly stark ending. This tonal shift gave the movie some much needed gravitas.
I was not expecting to like this as much as I did.

Gripping and intense. Tatsuya Nakadai's performance as the grieving ronin, Tsugomu, is perfect in his vengeance.
This meditation on life and death politics, the complexities of honor, and the strength of traditions in Japan are called into question as well as what it means to be a samurai vs a human.
What follows is a slow burn to retribution and a trail of blood and destruction in Tsugomu's wake.
