Really fine performances all around.  Jodie Comer founds depths to that character is didn’t see coming. Tom Hardy hits a lot of the same notes as in many of his other roles, but still totally engaging and real. Austin Butler as good as I’ve seen him. Michael Shannon (because Jeff Nichols of course) steals every scene he is in, especially his masterful monologue on being denied military service. Wonderfully directed too.  What can I say, I’m a Nichols fan! I…

An absolute rumpus from beginning to end.  The odd romantic/action/comedy in which the two love interests remain in love from beginning to end, and the tension is centered around communication (and also kicking the ass of a smarmy movie star).  Loved the soundtrack. I mean they really left us hanging at the end of the Against All Odds karaoke scene.  I really wanted the payoff, but it served the story well.  Fantastic action sequences.  I anticipated nearly every “twist” in advance but it didn't affect my enjoyment because it was pulled off with such charisma.  Great, clean, funny, high-octane fun.

Another face melter! A very satisfying origin story that left me wanting even more.  Some of the arial shots looked like overly obvious CGI, which I didn’t get so much from Fury Road, and as the movie wound down I wondered if we would ever get more lines from Furiosa…but the lack of dialogue really make the last extended confrontational exchange incredibly powerful.  I’ve read a bit, from the female stars especially, about how emotionally difficult these films are to…

Knock-you-flat visuals.  Like, truly stunning.  This is the stuff big screens are made for. The worm riding, the battle sequences, the fight choreography, spectacularly impressive.  But the acting, on top of all that, is remarkable. Impressed most by the portrayal of Chani’s struggle in accepting Paul’s prophetic path, even as he struggles with it himself.  Knowing first hand the dangers of high demand religion, recognizing brainwashing, struggling with confirmation bias - it’s all here.  The dynamics between the Bene Geserit,…
