    Blade Runner 2049

    ★★★★★

Not seeing Blade Runner 2049 in IMAX has always been one of my greatest cinematic regrets, and so when I saw that there was a one-off special screening on a random Tuesday night, I absolutely leapt at the opportunity.

    It was breath-taking.

The film is absolutely gorgeous, and it goes without saying that the IMAX format elevates absolutely everything. Cells interlinked became a resonance within my soul; the intensity of the scene set against blinding white walls absolutely needles at…

    Past Lives

    ★★★★★

Past Lives feels like wistfulness; like an eternal longing for a summer and a self that's long gone. From the way the ambient noises feature so prominently, to the loving depictions of Seoul and New York, there's an ache to each scene that simply feels like a yearning for something buried deep within the past. The film beautifully explores the small what ifs and missed moments in life, and it also explores the way we change as we grow and…

    Civil War

Frenetic and not at all what I (and I suspect many) expected, which I think was for the best.

There’s a lot to say here on media, photo-journalism, morality, desensitization, de-humanization, and legacy. There’s perhaps not much to say on the political side as the promotion and title may have implied. The choice to place this in America given the political climate is interesting and could easily be either a marketing tactic or a ‘write what you know’ (or what…

    My Old Ass

    ★★★★

My Old Ass initially presents itself with a rough, irreverent exterior, but beneath that is a sincere, soft, gooey molten core. There's a golden haze of nostalgia to Elliott's days as she navigates this final stretch of childhood and all the accompanying growing pains (set against the incredibly beautiful backdrop of Maude Island) that it's so easy to fall in love with this film and its premise.

I just always thought it was going to be here to come back…

Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed from the Fremen naib to a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it.

I have seen a friend become a worshiper, he thought.

    Rapturous perfection.

    Dune: Part Two

    ★★★★★

A vast, empty desert planet that invokes peace and beauty despite its harsh conditions; wildly alien planets that assault your senses and imbue unease; awe-inspiring desert power.

There’s something so heady and addictive about Denis Villeneuve's Dune. Part One entices you, drip-feeds you, then completely immerses you inside this complex, exquisite world, establishing the characters, the world-building and the political landscape. With all that done, all Dune: Part Two needs to do is reap the benefits — and it does…
