The subtext of this film is interesting enough as is, but I think what jumped out most to me in this viewing was just how near surreal and anachronistic this whole thing feels. It's as if the town from Twin Peaks happened to be a sundown town. Everything about it makes it feel like an ugly, living, breathing space. The relative quiet, minimalistic, laid-back nature of the jazzy soundtrack really adds to this casual mysticism the film dives into.
