Kind of unwieldy. Mile-wide/inch-deep with the sci-fi concept and the political commentary, even if both are well-intentioned and often thought-provoking. There’s too much good to write it all off, but it’s tough to wrap my arms around completely (with tighter prior work looming large, obviously). Still, love the swings it’s taking!

The Big Lebowski 1998
“Sometimes, there’s a man.”
Incredibly layered, hilariously clever, with a tremendous cast of potent characters—like any great Coen Brothers film. There’s so much going on here. It’s rewarding to unpack, but it’s just as fun to take it easy.
It is good knowing he’s out there, The Dude. I hope he’s holding up alright in this late capitalist hellscape.

The Wages of Fear 1953
In-flight entertainment, leg 2, part 3
Takes about an hour to shift into gear but it sure runs hot after that. Watched this because of Danny Boyle via the Blank Check boys and I can definitely see what he saw in it for Sunshine. I still have some tonal gripes for a movie that hinges so much on that area, but those feel like lingering immature instincts on my part. Plus now this frees me up to check out Sorcerer.
