The Killing of a Chinese Bookie 1976
First out of the Cassavetes box set. Legendary movie where the actors are given space to perform and improvise while the tone gets established and held throughout. It’s a mob movie but with emotion and dead space and dancing where you can absorb the world while drowning in it. I like him I hate him it’s complicated. Very cool to see Timothy Carey pop up again after just watching the killing too. Def see the Sean baker inspiration and the safdie brothers but maybe it’s just all Independent film that owes him a debt. Stoked to watch everything else in the collection.
